Religion and Minecraft Mix During the GDC Game Design Challenge
March 4, 2011 at 5:45 PM

Jason Rohrer, creator of The Passage and Sleep Is Death, was joined by fellow panelists John Romero and Jenova Chen at the 2011 Game Developer’s Conference Game Design Challenge. The three were tasked with creating a game concept around "a game as a religion." While all three concepts were impressive, it was Rohrer’s idea that received the most attention.

His idea was a Minecraft mod that acted as a piece of spiritual significance. Contained on a single USB stick, the rules of the game state that you can play until you die, but then you must quit immediately and pass the game off to someone else. “We become like gods to those who come after us,” he said, explaining how that single USB stick will develop a legacy and significance for those who play it, as well as those who hope to play it.

As usual, Rohrer’s ideas about game design continue to be fascinating. Rohrer has made a career from pulling emotion out of game design. The inspiration for this game came from stories left behind by his late grandfather, who left behind a real legacy, not unlike the virtual one Rohrer envisioned.

As much as it’s fun to hear about the next big game announcement, I hope you’re all with me in thinking that stories like this are just as interesting, if not more so. This is the future of game design, folks.

Sombreros
March 4, 2011 at 5:02 PM

Sombreros is an arcade shooter made for Arthur Lee’s Action 52 remake challenge, where you play as a Mexican gunslinger who has to retrieve a couple of giant hats from the bad guys. Ammo is unlimited in the game, and you can also call upon your sombrero power to pause time and mark enemies for a round of quick fire shots. Doing this depletes your sombrero gauge, but you can replenish it by collecting hats from defeated outlaws.

You won’t just be shooting at henchmen throughout the entire game. There are a number of occasions where you have to duel with one or more gunslingers, and some levels have doors that you have to break down before you can proceed. The obligatory boss fights are there as well, featuring gang leaders who can take more damage than the common criminal.

Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath Dated for Marvel vs. Capcom 3
March 4, 2011 at 4:58 PM

As promised, Capcom has revealed the dates that Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath are coming to Marvel vs. Capcom 3. The duo will be available to download on March 15, running at 400 Microsoft Points each.

Jill is from the Capcom’s Resident Evil series, while the gigantic one-eyed alien creature Shuma-Gorath is the work of Marvel.

Capcom commented on supposedly delaying the availability of the characters, which were rumored to release on March 1 alongside the costume DLC pack. “We did not intentionally delay the DLC characters as we know how badly our fans want to play them,” Capcom said. “This was an unfortunate technical issue and we apologize for them not being available.”

Bungie's Next May Not Be WoW in Space, But It's Close
March 4, 2011 at 4:53 PM

Ever since Bungie signed a 10-year partnership with Activision, speculation and rumors suggested the game franchise would be some kind of massively multiplayer game - "World of Warcraft in space" was a term tossed around often. At Bungie’s GDC panel, David Aldridge, the studio’s lead network engineer, confirmed that the team is in fact working on a massively multiplayer action game. He was also quick to say that it is not "World of Warcraft in space."

Rumored to be called Destiny, the game was teased at last year’s GDC, where lead writer and cinematics director Joseph Staten asked the audience, "Wouldn’t it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you?"

With the amount of work Bungie has put into Halo matchmaking, online infrastructure, and netcode, a first-person shooter/MMO-hybrid is a no-brainer. Imagine a modern day Planetside developed by one of the most talented studios in the business – exciting, no?

Now that we know that much, it opens up a host of new questions for the game. What platforms will it be on? How many players will it support? Will it have an online fee? I suspect we may learn the answer to at least a couple of these questions before the year is up.

Miyamoto Never Thought the First Zelda Would Go Mainstream
March 4, 2011 at 4:22 PM

In a recent Iwata Asks feature, Shigeru Miyamoto went into detail about his initial expectations for The Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System. He stated that he made the first game very plain, never imagining that the genre would attract such a massive and loyal fan base. “When I was making The Legend of Zelda, it was very plain,” stated Miyamoto.

Despite its visuals, The Legend of Zelda on the NES was quite revolutionary for its time and it kicked off one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises, which in turn spawned many sequels and several imitations in the process. “I didn’t think that genre would be seen as something so mainstream,” continued Miyamoto. “I really didn’t expect the response I got when I first made The Legend of Zelda. A world of swords and magic wasn’t really considered mainstream at the time.”

During the interview, Miyamoto compared The Legend of Zelda to the Nintendo 3DS launch title Steel Diver. According to the Zelda creator, Steel Diver and The Legend of Zelda are “both plain.” He iterated that while both games have a plain look and design, they’re both focused on providing a fun experience for gamers. “I believe they’re the same in the way that they’re both something fun. It’s just a matter of presentation to get more people interested in it.”

Though the similarities between The Legend of Zelda and Steel Diver end there, it’s going to be interesting to see how North American 3DS consumers react to the launch game when they play it. It’s doubtful that it will have the same impact as the legendary quest of the young boy who saved a princess and defeated the king of evil, but it probably will have a loyal following.

New World
March 4, 2011 at 4:03 PM

New World is a turn-based strategy game that is best described as a mix of Colonization and Desktop Dungeons, created by Christopher for submission to YoYo Games’ discovery-themed competition. The Challenge mode provides a different objective to achieve for every section of the world map, while the freeplay mode allows you to customize the rulesets and resources before starting a new game session.

Parts of the map are revealed when your ship moves into an unexplored section of the land, but food is consumed as well every time you decide to set sail. Food is represented by the bread icons (or wheat when rations are low), and currency is depicted by gold, silver and copper pieces.

PSP Go Price Dropped to $149.99
March 4, 2011 at 3:54 PM

After dropping the price to $129.99 for the PlayStation Portable, Sony revealed that the PSP Go will also be seeing a reduction. Retailers will now sell the handheld for $149.99, which is a decent amount lower than its initial price tag yet still a tad higher than the PSP’s enticing $129.99 asking price. This is clearly a strategy intended to sell some more PSP Go systems before the launch of the NGP, and you know what? Who cares! If you’ve been meaning to get a PSP or PSP Go, now would be the time to do so as both handhelds are considerably affordable—though it’s debatable which offers the better deal.

In addition to the price slash, gamers can purchase software for the system at readjusted prices. New games will sell for $29.99, Greatest Hits releases will cost $19.99, and Favorites will be priced at $9.99. As we near the release of the NGP, more deals might crop up.

Fancy Pants Adventures Hitting XBLA, PSN This Spring
March 4, 2011 at 3:21 PM

The Fancy Pants Adventures is racing onto both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this spring. Originally released as browser-based games, the adventures of Fancy Pants Man are now headed to consoles, and so far, the title looks very promising. The game will include all of the staples of the series, such as springs, loops, big spiders, and steep inclines. Additionally, Fancy Pants Man will be able to roll, slide, and wall jump through levels.

This version appears to be a completely new game rather than a remake of the previous two chapters in the series. The upcoming platformer will incorporate new features such as swimming levels, sword-swinging combat, and a multiplayer mode. The game is being published by Electronic Arts and developed by creator Brad Borne and Over the Top Games. Prepare to run fast and fancy this spring on XBLA and PSN.

MooD: Waist-High in Hell
March 4, 2011 at 3:00 PM

MooD: Waist-High in Hell is a top-down shooter that features enemies from the Doom 3 universe, redrawn by Amon26 as minute but recognisable 2D sprites for the players to shoot at. The game features both a single-player campaign and a hotseat deathmatch mode, although you can’t strafe nor change the frag win count which is set to twenty by default.

Our space marine starts out with a plain pistol in hand to use for defense, but enemies do drop weapons and medkits often enough when they are defeated. Some of the guns that you can acquire include a shotgun, machine gun, plasma gun, and the infamous BFG weapon.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Double XP Weekend Starts Today
March 4, 2011 at 11:27 AM

It’s that time again! Call of Duty: Black Ops players are invited to get their shooting fix online as Treyarch hosts the second Double XP weekend. Starting today at 10:00 AM PST, Black Ops players can earn twice as many experience points during their online multiplayer sessions.

The Double XP weekend comes to a halt on Monday morning at 8:00 AM PST. I can only imagine the number of Black Ops players who will be glued to their television screens or computer monitors from now until then. The Double XP weekend is on, and gamers playing Black Ops on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and PC are invited to shoot to their hearts’ content and earn twice as many experience points than usual.

GT Academy 2011 Begins Today
March 4, 2011 at 9:44 AM

The first leg of Sony’s GT Academy begins today, and getting close to the prestigious Dubai 24 Hour International race is now one step easier. Wannabe racers must hit the GT Academy 2011 special event in Gran Turismo 5 and storm the leaderboards until April 17, where the top 20 from each European territory group move onto a national final, along with four possible wild card entrants.

Eligible countries include UK and Ireland, France and Switzerland, Germany and Austria, Spain and Portugal, Holland, and Italy.

Successful gamers who pass the opening stage will then advance to the Silverstone circuit for the GT Academy Race Camp, a comprehensive training school for racing drivers. Then the opportunity to obtain a racing license will arise, and should the victor earn it, he will sit behind the wheel of a Nissan 370Z GT4 at the Dubai 24 Hour International race.

Not a bad deal for sitting, learning, and hammering a track in a video game.

Epic Would "Love" to Bring Gears to PlayStation
March 3, 2011 at 7:55 PM

The Gears of War series has appeared exclusively on the Xbox 360 for four years, but that hasn’t deterred Epic’s desire to get the third-person shooter onto PlayStation.

Epic president Mike Capps told InustryGamers it’s a move he’d “love” to do. “Do we wish we could take all those Killzone [players] and Resistance fans on PS3, and get them to say ‘Gears is awesome’? Yeah, sure I’d love to ship the Gears trilogy on PlayStation. That would be fun. I want to be there; I want to be everywhere.”

Will it ever happen? Capps stated that Gears is Epic’s IP, and they can do as they please with it. “We definitely own Gears of War. This is our franchise, our IP.” But there’s not a bad word to be said about Microsoft. “I don’t regret what we’re doing with Microsoft. They make it worthwhile all the time.”

Gears on the PS3 could happen, it seems, but it’s a bit of a stretch considering the age of the series. One could easily assume Microsoft wouldn’t be too pleased if it did happen, though.

Catherine Seduces with a Ton of New Screenshots
March 3, 2011 at 7:21 PM

Catherine, despite being utterly indecipherable to the majority of U.S. Gamers, has been on our radar for a while now. With a North American release date confirmed by Atlus, we will only have to wait until Summer to find out if all the attention has been justified.

What is it about this game? Well, there’s the obvious sex appeal of a cute girl being incredibly suggestive, but I think it has more to do with the fact that the game seems to be dabbling in some genuinely mature themes. Maybe I’m hoping for too much, but in the meantime you can at least enjoy this big batch of new screenshots:
